In anticipation of my upcoming trip to Berlin, I found myself immersed in a vivid daydream, imagining what it might have been like to have lived in this vibrant city during my 20s, a time marked by exploration, rebellion, and the pulsating energy of youth. As I envisioned this youthful existence, my thoughts naturally drifted to the passage of time, and I fast-forwarded to my 60s, contemplating the inevitable changes that life brings. This reflective process is what inspired the creation of my project, "Lost in Berlin." It consists of thirty-five unique characters, each one a product of my preconceived thoughts and imaginings about the dynamic underground club scene, the punk movement, and the graffiti culture that defined an era in Berlin's history.

Regarding the technique employed in this project, I began with my own travel photography, predominantly capturing people in striking black and white images that I knew could be massaged into a sense of nostalgia and raw emotion. These photographs served as a foundation, a canvas upon which I could build my characters. To enhance this creative process, I incorporated prompts that depicted the vivid scenes I imagined—scenes filled with the energy of underground clubs, the spirit of punk rock, and the artistry of graffiti that adorned the city’s walls. Utilizing Midjourney, I generated captivating visual representations of these characters, each one reflecting the essence of the Berlin underground. The process was iterative; I moved back and forth between the created images and textual prompts, engaging with advanced AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. Through this dialogue, I sought to articulate the inner thoughts and reflections of these characters, delving into their experiences and the profound impact of their surroundings on their lives.
"Every corner held a memory, a snapshot of the lives that once intertwined within these spaces. The city's vibrant pulse was our backdrop, its energy a constant companion as we wandered through its streets, chasing dreams and fleeting moments of joy. We were young, fearless, and alive, each night an adventure, each dawn a promise of more to come."
As the project evolved over the past couple of months, it underwent several transformations. Initially, it began as a collection of my imaginative daydreams, exploring the idea of what it would have taken to be brave enough to immerse myself in this bold world of creativity and defiance. However, as I completed the last few characters, my reflections deepened, leading me to ponder where these vibrant individuals might find themselves now, in their 60s and 70s. This shift in perspective allowed me to explore a richer narrative, one that delves into the themes of aging, the passage of time, and the myriad decisions we make throughout our lives. It became a poignant exploration of how our youthful choices shape our later years, and how the memories of a spirited past can linger, influencing our present selves and the way we navigate the complexities of life as we grow older.
“This is not the Berlin I knew.
But the one that knew me.
Before I ever walked its streets,
I remembered its shadows.”
"In the club’s blackened corners,
we found each other.
Outside,
we lost ourselves."
“The lost nights return only in fragments—
half-remembered, fully felt.”
“The graffiti stood as silent witnesses to our stories,
each mark a testament to moments shared
and secrets kept.”
Consistently presenting my storytelling often feels challenging. ARTCHRONICLES has been a way for me to document my creative art journey and organize my stories into a cohesive format. The Lost Years in Berlin is the latest addition to my collection.
Currently being printed are 80 pages of my fictional adventure in Berlin.
