Considering the difficulties in getting your artwork recognized, I find it helpful to submit to Open Calls. There are many organizations you can apply to; some are sponsored, others are juried, and many are online. Themed Open Calls provide a fun chance to experiment and express your creativity. Naturally, it's always disappointing when you're not chosen, and I would say it is currently at 50-50. That won't stop me.
